Vienna, Budapest, Ljubljana, Salzburg, and Vienna
Starting and ending in Vienna, this round trip takes in three historic capitals and in Salzburg, Lake Bled, the Austrian Lakes and Balaton, some of the finest landscapes and sightseeing in Central Europe.
Suggested Programme
Vienna. Arrive in the imperial city of Vienna and settle into your hotel.
Vienna. Begin your discovery of the Austrian capital with a guided tour, featuring the impressive Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs. Continue by exploring the city’s museums and galleries, see the Giant Ferris Wheel, stroll through the hectic Naschmarkt, then find a traditional cafe to relax with a coffee and maybe a sachertorte.
Budapest. We leave Vienna (to return later) and travel to Budapest, the “Pearl of the Danube”. In the afternoon we have a guided tour to get your bearings, before dinner in your hotel. Walk through Budapest, the golden city, and admire its sights such as the Parliament, the Chain Bridge, the Fisherman’s Bastion or the Matthias Church. Be enchanted by this unique, beautiful city day and night.
Budapest. Today there is the chance to enjoy a unique cruise on the Danube where you can admire Budapest’s highlights, such as the Parliament and Castle Hill, from a different perspective. Marvel at the beautiful panorama and the impressive buildings.
Later, become part of the Hungarian culture and have dinner in a typical Hungarian restaurant. Learn the basic steps of the traditional Csárdás dance and let yourself be carried away by the music.
Ljubljana. After breakfast we leave Budapest and drive to Lake Balaton, a major holiday destination in itself, surrounded by villages and vineyards. We continue into Slovenia to the capital, Ljubljana.
On arriving in Ljubljana, we meet our guide for a city tour. The cityscape is characterized by the high castle and the buildings by the architect Joze Plecnik. You will discover the remains of the Roman settlement of Emona and the baroque city center with its many bridges. Despite its small size, Ljubljana offers a variety of history and architecture.
Villach/Carinthia. We leave Ljubljana for Austria, pausing to admire one of Europe’s most picturesque locations, Lake Bled. Surrounded by the mountains of the Julian Alps and overlooked by a medieval castle, the centrepiece of the scene is a beautiful church on an island in the middle of the lake. You can walk around the lake or take it easy with a boat ride – called a pletna – to the island.
Onwards then to Villach in the Carinthia region of Austria, famous for its alpine lakes and mountains, for our overnight hotel and dinner.
Salzburg. Leaving Carinthia, we travel north into Austria. Once into Salzburgerland, we take a detour to see the iconic lakeside village of Hallstatt before visiting locations made famous by the film, “The Sound of Music”. After Mondsee and St Gilgen on Wolfgangsee, we arrive in the beautifully preserved city of Salzburg.
Salzburg. We meet our guide and explore the city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and feel the magic that inspired Mozart and “The Sound of Music.” Discover Salzburg, the city of Mozart with world famous cafés, observation terraces and much more highlights. Your guide will bring you to Hohensalzburg. At the end of the day you will enjoy a delicious dinner in Sankt Peter Stiftskeller in the historic city centre.
Vienna. Following the River Danube to Vienna, the journey can be broken with a visit to the Benedictine Melk Abbey – with the opportunity to take a cruise along the River Danube to Durnstein, surrounded by the vineyards of the Wachau region. Arriving in Vienna there will be plenty of time to check in to your hotel and get ready for dinner.
Vienna. After free time for shopping, there will be a chance to visit the magnificent Baroque Belvedere Palace. It is not just a palace – it also houses one of Austria’s most valuable art collections, most notably the works by Gustav Klimt. In the evening, visit a Heurige or wine tavern amid the vineyards on the edge of the city, for a farewell night of traditional food and music and of course, local wine.
Bid farewell to Vienna.
