The Tastes and Traditions of Austria
Discover the variety in culinary offers and picturesque countryside that the Upper Austrian region has to offer.
Suggested Programme
Arrival and dinner at your hotel.
Visit the thousand-year old jewel on the Inn, Obernberg, where you will discover picturesque landscapes, and where the locals live with, and from, nature. At the Obernberg Falconry, you can meet the birds of prey close up, and see the birds in flight.
We can also arrange a lunch in the region before you travel to Reichersberg Abbey which overlooks the River Inn and has been the religious centre of the “Innviertel” for over one thousand years.
During a guided tour, you will be shown the church, the cloister and the library before enjoying a wine tasting. In the late afternoon, visit the Jenichl farm in Altheim, which lives by the slogan “from dough to dumpling”.
After a personal greeting from the owner, you will delve into the world of the “Innvierteler” dumpling, learning the ins and outs of dumpling making. Once you have finished, you can enjoy the dumplings before returning to your hotel for the evening.
After breakfast travel to the largest part of the Bohemian Massif in Austria, the Sauwald, where you can enjoy breath-taking views from the longest treetop walkway in the world.
With a length of 1,000m, the wood construction swings between the trees and gives a unique insight to the flora and fauna of the forest. An absolute highlight is the 40m high tower where you can enjoy a circular panoramic view of the region.
In the afternoon, take a traditional wooden boat trip along the Danube, through the “Schlögener Schlinge” to Haibach and enjoy the beauty along the Danube shores. To end the day we recommend a visit to Engelzell Abbey.
In the “Kalkalpen” National Park you will have an enjoyable day starting in Molln, where you receive a sweet Upper Austrian snack at the Illecker Café-Konditorei.
You will then be met by your guide for a walk through the Boding Gorge one of the most impressive mountain gorges of Upper Austria.
After lunch travel to the Steyr valley, known for its beautiful countryside and also for the unique Jew’s Harp maker, Wimmer and the ornamental ironworkers in Molln, both of which you will visit.
During the day, you can also enjoy a cider, fruit wine and sparkling wine tasting with a sommelier, accompanied by an Upper Austrian cold platter.
Depart for your trip home after breakfast.
