Journey to Austria (with overnight in the Cologne area).
Journey to Austria.
Salzburg
Salzburg, the capital city of the Salzburg region, was once rightly described as “one of the most beautiful regions on Earth”. This beautiful city is idyllically situated among lakes and mountains and invites you to discover a unique cultural heritage. Spend a full day here discovering this gem of a city during a guided tour as well as on your own and see the most famous sights such as Mirabell Palace and the house W.A. Mozart was born in.
We also recommend a visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress (optional, not included) towering majestically over the city. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe, and as well as a fascinating history and architecture, it offers breath-taking views of Salzburg.
Grossglockner & High Tauern National Park
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. The mountain pass road with a total of 48 km and 36 turns leads deep into the centre of Austria’s largest national park with an area of 1,800 km² that extends across the provinces of Salzburg, Tyrol and Carinthia. The highlight of driving on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is, without a doubt, the viewpoint that the Habsburg emperor Franz Joseph I once visited himself and which still bears his name: Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. Today, a multi-storey car park, visitors’ centre, observation tower and gastronomy can be found up here, all of which offer unique views of the snow-covered Grossglockner (3,798 m – Austria’s highest mountain), the Pasterze (8 km long and Austria’s longest glacier) and the Johannisberg (3,453 m).
Day at leisure (optional: Stubnerkogel and/or spa)
Take some time to relax in the hotel’s own spa or visit Alpentherme Gastein in the heart of the town (optional, not included, from EUR 31.50).
Alternatively you can make your way to the neighbouring town of Bad Gastein and there take the Stubnerkogelbahn (cable car) to the summit station of the 2228 m high Stubnerkogel. Here you can take in spectacular views and get your thrills when stepping onto the 140 m long and just one metre wide hanging bridge. It was built as a swinging rope construction and leads directly from the terrace of the mountain restaurant to the sender station. A head for heights and strong nerves are needed for the crossing since the hanging bridge is transparent, too. Only a wire mesh guardrail separates adventurous skywalkers from the 28 m drop.
Kimml Waterfalls & Zell am See
With approx. 4,000,000 visitors per year, the Krimml Waterfalls are one of the Austria’s Top 10 most visited attractions. An average of 5.6 m³ of water per second plummets into the valley in the three stages of falls a total of 380 m. The refreshing mist from the Krimml Waterfalls amid the wonderful backdrop of the High Tauern National Park is a delight for young and old. Learn everything you need to know about the waterfalls at the Information Plaza at the entrance. You can reach the lowest waterfall on foot in 10-15 minutes. From there the serpentine Waterfall Trail leads up to the uppermost waterfall (approx. 1.15 hours on foot) and further to the Krimml Ache Valley. Observation platforms provide spectacular views of the thundering falls along the way.
On your way back, stop at the historic town of Zell am See, nestled between the mountains and the lake. One of the best ways to admire the region is from a boat on Lake Zell itself. Enjoy a relaxing cruise and see the historic old town and its beautiful buildings as well as the alpine landscape with the snow-covered mountains of the High Tauern and the lush, green slopes of the Pinzgau Grass Hills from this unique perspective.
Make this day even more spectacular by adding ride on the Pinzgaubahn steam train (optional, not included)!
Hohenwerfen Castle
Make your way to Werfen today and to the spectacular medieval castle of Hohenwerfen. During a personal guided tour with historically costumed castle tour guides, you will dive deep into the turbulent history of the fortress. A special additional highlight is the birds of prey flight demonstration of the historic Provincial Falconry Center. You can also visit the Falconry Museum and the special exhibition in the armoury with an audioguide.
