Highlights of Upper Austria
Suggested Programme
Arrival at Linz, the capital city of Upper Austria. Check-in at your hotel.
After breakfast, you start the day with a guided city tour in Linz. Enjoy some free time in this city on the banks of the Danube. We recommend you visit one of the many museums, such as the art museum LENTOS or the Ars Electronica Center, also known as the “Museum of the Future”. Afterwards you take one of the word’s steepest adhesion railways, the “Pöstlingbergbahn”. Starting from the main square, this “mountain tramway” climbs Linz’s local mountain in only 20 minutes. There you will see the pilgrimage basilica as well as the “Grottenbahn”, a realm of fairy tales and dwarves, and enjoy the breath-taking view of the city by the Danube.
Today you will make you way to the city of Steyr, where the rivers Steyr and Enns meet. Here you will take the Steyrtalbahn, a historic narrow-gauge railway, to Grünburg (subject to the train’s timetable). Free time for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the Jaw Harp Manufacturing & Show Plant Wimmer-Bades. The production and manufacturing of the Mollner Jaw Harp was included in 2014 by the Austrian Commission for UNESCO in the Immaterial Cultural Heritage directory in the category Customs, Knowledge & Craft Techniques.
Visit Gmunden, a town famous for its very distinct style of traditional Austrian pottery. Take a tour of the Gmundner manufactory, the largest ceramic manufacturer in central Europe, and learn how they have been making pottery here since 1492. Afterwards continue along the lake Traunsee to Bad Ischl. Admire the Kaiservilla, the Imperial villa, before your journey takes you onwards to Hallstatt. Probably the most photographed village in the area, Hallstatt is a UNESCO world heritage site that has fascinated visitors from all over the world so much that an exact (mirrored) copy was constructed in China.
If you want to spend more time in Hallstatt you can also visit the famous salt mines (optional, not included). Here you can take the funicular up the “salt mountain” Salzberg and enjoy the spectacular view of the lake and the town. The mine takes you back to the distant past, when people were first mining for the precious “white gold” about 7,000 years ago. Highlights include Europe’s oldest wooden staircase and the (modern) wooden slides. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential!
Head to Kremsmünster Abbey today. A guided tour will give you an insight into the abbey’s past and present. You will see the Imperial Hall, sculptures and paintings from six centuries and much more. After a lunch break you will go on to see the BMW Group Werk Steyr. Here, about 4.500 people are working on developing the mobility of the future – from innovative diesel and petrol engines to sustainable e-mobility components. The guided tour will also let you catch a glimpse of this famous brand’s live production.
Alternatively, you can travel to Schärding in the morning, a small town with a pretty, baroque centre. Embark on a 2-hour cruise with the “brewery ship” (optional, not included) along the river Inn almost as far as Passau and back. During the cruise, beer will be brewed and you will have the opportunity to taste it. It is also possible to have lunch on board. Head to Passau next, just across the German border. Explore the “City of Three Rivers” at the confluence of the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz with a city guide (optional, not included).
