Magnificant Fortresses and Castles of East Prussia

Between 1230 and 1525 numerous castles, fortresses and Churches alongside other historical buildings in the Gothic style were built in former East Prussia. During this tour, you will get to see many of these historical buildings, some still in excellent condition and others as picturesque ruins.

Suggested Programme

Day 1

Arrival and dinner at your hotel.

Day 2

Enjoy a city tour in one of Poland’s oldest and prettiest city’s, Torun. The Gothic old town has been entered onto the UNESCO list and during a city tour you will get to see the remains to the Teutonic Order fortress, the birth house of Copernicus and the St. Johannes Church with the oldest bell in Poland.

You then continue your day with a visit to Kulm with its Old Town and the Market square with its Renaissance style town hall. After some free time, continue on to the Bytow Fortress, a mighty fortress with a rectangular floor plan and round and square turrets. The fortress is now home to the West Kashubian museum.

Day 3

Meet your city guide for a tour of the Old Town of Gdansk. The town was once an important trading centre and from 1454 it was a sovereign free city under the protection of the King of Poland.

During your tour you will see the Marien Church, the largest brick church in Europe, the town hall, the old mill as well as many beautiful mansions in the old town along the Vltava River.

Your day then continues with a visit to Pelplin and a visit to the Cistercian abbey with its imposing Gothic Cathedral, followed by a visit to the Marienwerder castle before traveling to your hotel in Marienburg. In the evening, you can enjoy the “Light and Sound” show at the castle.

Day 4

Day 5

Gizycko, the main town of the Mazury Lake district is also on the programme as is the Boyen Fortress with its trenches and bastions. The fortress played an important part in defending the town from the Russians in the First World War.

During your visit you can enjoy a sail on the lake. In Olsztyn you then get to see the sun dial built by Copernicus, who worked as a cathedral chapter administrator. In Olsztynek we suggest a visit to the open air museum before travelling on to Grunwald.
