The Great Austrian Bake Off
Embark on a journey into the world of famous Austrian delicacies, with a chance to experience an apple strudel show as well as the process of making Mozartkugeln and to create your own Linzer cake.
Suggested Programme
Arrival and dinner at you hotel.
Visit Salzburg, home to Mozart and The Sound of Music, where you will meet your guide for a city tour. Around lunch time you will participate in an apple strudel cooking lesson where you have the chance to try your hand at one of the most famous desserts in Austria. The programme also includes a traditional goulash soup for lunch, which will be served before your own cooked creations. Why not enhance your stay with a visit to the delightful Hellbrunn Palace this afternoon?
Make your way to the beautiful lake Wolfgangsee where you will board the famous train Schafbergbahn, the steepest cogwheel railway in Austria. Since 1893 mighty steam locomotives have powered their way from the lakeside base station in St. Wolfgang to the 1783 m high summit of the Schafberg. The Schafbergbahn allows every visitor to conquer the mountain in comfort and style, making the entire journey an unforgettable experience! After your return to the valley you will take the ship to St. Gilgen. Here you will participate in a hands-on Mozartkugel show at Café Dallmann. Experience how the famous confectionery is made and dip it into the chocolate yourself. Afterwards you can enjoy some coffee and cake on the café’s terrace.
Continue your journey to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. Your first stop today will be the hands-on bakery Jindrak where you can create your own Linzer cake. Linzer cake is a very short, crumbly pastry covered by a lattice of dough strips. The Linzer Torte is said to be the oldest cake in the world. A Veronese recipe from 1653 was found in the archive of Admont Abbey. While your cake is being baked in the oven, you will take a city tour of Linz and learn some interesting facts from your guide. After picking up your Linzer cake your coach will take you to the interactive world of bread, Haubiversum, for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the bread baking process.
Explore Austria’s capital, Vienna. Enjoy a city tour and stop at the famous Hotel Sacher for a piece of the world-famous Sacher cake and a hot drink. A further highlight is a visit to the Hofburg, the former residence of the Austrian Emperors.
